4 Steps to Maintaining a Blowout Overnight

You’ve finally mastered the fabled blowout - but, alas, you need your beauty sleep. How will it look in the morning? Will vibrant volume and beautiful bounce turn to frantic frizz overnight?

A blowout that lasts two days? You better believe it.

You’ve finally mastered the fabled blowout - but, alas, you need your beauty sleep. How will it look in the morning? Will vibrant volume and beautiful bounce turn to frantic frizz overnight?

Fear not, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to preserve your perfect blowout when you go to bed. Follow these steps to wake up looking more Blake Lively, and less Blake Lifeless.

1. Prep Before Bed

The real ace up your sleeve here is the pre-bed prep. Build this little ritual into your bedtime routine, and you’ll wake up with a big smug grin in the morning.

  • Use a boar bristle brush to remove tangles and redistribute oils.

  • Lightly apply a dry shampoo or volumising powder to your roots to absorb sweat.

  • Smooth ends with a drop of lightweight serum, avoiding anything too heavy.

  • Pull your hair into a very loose ponytail or bun; just tight enough to stay put.

  • If sleeping with a knot or bun isn’t comfortable, spread your hair out over the pillow above your head when you go to sleep.

  • ...or wear a silk bonnet (fairly cheap on Amazon)

2. Choose the Right Pillowcase

Trust us on this one - ditch the cotton pillowcase for a night and switch to silk or satin. These materials create way less friction, which means less heat and less frizz to mess with your blowout.

As we’re tossing and turning in the night and our body temperature fluctuates, we undo a lot of the hard work that’s gone into crafting the perfect blowout. You’ll be surprised at the difference a silk or satin pillowcase can make, and they’re not all that expensive either (£10-30 depending on where you shop).

These softer, kinder fabrics help preserve shine and prevent dreaded creases and untameable frizz. You can also try a cooling pillow if you’re someone who sweats a lot in your sleep.

3. Humidity-free Snoozing

If possible, try and keep your bedroom cool and dry while you sleep to avoid humidity. While humidity isn’t something we Brits tend to worry too much about, even in the UK climate, a dehumidifier can make a big difference to whether or not your blowout survives until morning.

If you tend to sweat a lot at night (hey, no judgement here), try a cooling pillow in combination with your silk or satin pillowcase.

4. Essential Morning Touch-Ups

So you’ve got some well-deserved shut-eye, slid out of bed to creep tentatively towards the mirror to see what you’ve got left to work with. Here’s how to restore some of yesterday’s blowout glory!

  • Flip your head and shake out your hair gently with your fingers.

  • With a round brush and ceramic hairdryer on low, give any flat areas a quick refresh.

  • Finish with a cold shot from your hairdryer, a light-hold hairspray or a dry texture spray for extra hold.

While we know you’re unlikely to perfectly match the former splendour of yesterday’s do, it’s definitely possible to make a blowout last an extra day or so with a few hacks from the professionals!
